McDermott chooses Simwave as simulation partner for the Fast-Transit, Dynamically Positioned (DP2) construction vessel with an ultra-deepwater J-Lay system, AMAZON.

McDermott and Simwave have signed an agreement for the mathematical modelling of the Amazon, a Fast-Transit, dynamically positioned (DP2) construction vessel with an ultra-Deepwater J-Lay system. The complexity of the ship and the operations carried out by McDermott requires simulation with the highest accuracy and specific knowledge & skills by all people involved. Simwave will also develop highly specialized training and use their Centre of excellence in Rotterdam for applied research projects.

This pipe-laying vessel has LOA of 203.1 meters and is equipped with a powerful propulsion system, including 6 Azimuth propellers and 1 bow thruster with a distribution power of 28 MW.

Apart from a full hydrodynamic mathematical model with various loading conditions, complex mechanical laying equipment, high-quality 3D visual and CCTVs, a power management system is developed for installation of the real Kongsberg Dynamic Positioning software (K-Pos DP-2) of the Amazon at Simwave 360 Offshore Full Mission Bridge (FMB) simulator.

This project will create a unique opportunity for DP operators to improve maneuvering skills during pipe laying operations in a modern and practical way facing different sea conditions. Simwave’s teams started up the modelling process in Vietnam and The Netherlands and the model is expected to be fully operational in the summer of 2021. In the sequence, DP operators from McDermott will attend bespoke DP training, specially designed in accordance with their operations conditions and company procedures. Furthermore, McDermott will also invest on the training of shore-based personnel with regards to Dynamic Positioning, improving their knowledge about the system. The courses will enlighten essential elements of the use of Dynamic Positioning for installation of offshore pipelines, including standards from the new Code of Practice for Offshore Pipelaying and Umbilical Installation, just launched in 2020 by IMCA as publication M253.  For onshore personnel, Simwave will customize courses about Dynamic Positioning, following IMCA guideline M117, incorporating the most important aspects of DP during pipelaying operations.

We are honored to line up with McDermott to bring crew competence to a new standard!

‘With this contract we use the full capabilities of our centre of excellence, including the full use of hydronamics,  DP and muliple connected simulators to train staff and train multi-disciplinary teams for the most complex operations and prepare for emergency scenario’s’, says Cinthya Lopes, Technical Manager at Simwave and DP Specialist. ‘

“McDermott are delighted to be working with Simwave to produce comprehensive simulation, training  and planning tools that will assist us in taking our teams to the next level of competence, matching the sophistication of the Amazon’s new production and installation capabilities” said Neil Henderson, Amazon Conversion Operations Director.
