2019: The Rise of LNG as a Marine Fuel

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is an upcoming Marine Fuel, with a much better emissions performance compared to conventional fuels. 2019 can be considered as the year of acceleration for LNG as a marine fuel. New LNG-fueled vessels have been ordered, came into service and the LNG Bunkering network has been extended.

Our sister company Transafe B.V. has years of experience in the field of compliance and LNG as a marine fuel. Transafe assisted with different LNG projects, such as LNG Vessels and Bunker Barges. Using LNG as a marine fuel requires an enormous amount of change management for shipping companies; from new buildings to bunkering and from procedures to crew competencies. Simwave offers a broad range of training:

  • IGF (International Gas Fuel Code) Basic & Advanced
  • Training for shore-based personnel
  • On board training
  • Training for bunker companies, based on the IAPH (International Association of Ports and Harbors)

Simwave operates simulators for LNG Bunkering, LNG Engines and LNG as a cargo. We have a team of LNG specialists and our training exists of a mix of classroom based training, simulator based training and practical training. Our network allows us to add value by adding other activities as well, such as a visit to a bunker vessel or LNG firefighting.

If you have a question, please contact your Simwave contact person and we’ll make sure to create a customized training program for your organization.

Training Program for Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management

This November, in 12 days we received over 500 participants of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. In close cooperation with the Ministry, our Learning and Development specialists created a bespoke training program called the ‘OTO-Bedieningsdagen’(Educate, Train & Practice Operating Days).

Marcel Kind, CEO of Simwave, on the OTO-Bedieningsdagen: “The Dutch network of ports and rivers are world famous. All objects such as bridges and locks, need to be monitored, maintained and operated. This requires a team of professionals who are dealing with seagoing vessels, inland vessels and non-professional users of the waterways. The title of the training program was Professional Expertise. During this training program, the participants joined workshops on topics such as human factors and communication. They used a mix of classroom discussions and simulators during these sessions.

Simwave’s part task simulators for communication and navigational proficiency allows us to create complex scenarios with different kinds of ships and the use of locks and bridges. Our Visual Database Team, based in Vietnam, created a customized visual database for this training. This allowed the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management to create the desired scenarios and optimize the training outcome.”

Within 12 days, we served over 790 lunches and dinners in our bistro. The training days were very well received by both the participants and the principals. By training all stakeholders in the maritime industry, both in the public and private sector, we hope to make the industry even safer!
