Message from our CEO
Happy Tuesday!
In the last months we have set new records and reached new milestones in our centre of excellence. To start off, we provided more training than ever before and exceeded pre-Covid results. Next to our results, our applied research team has been receiving more and more port studies to realize and together with different stakeholders (e.g. terminal and pilots), we have delivered an extensive study on the import of LNG in Europe. We have also provided simulation runs for incident investigations and for new port developments. Our Simwave- Assessment Program is also in full swing, both for bridge & technical officers. Assessments are a strong tool that offers great value to shipping companies. This month we also released assessments for cargo operations specially designed for the tanker industry in order to meet the upcoming SIRE 2.0 requirements.
Our online activities are the fastest growing business line, with our in house developed Learning Management System and Competency Management System. Currently our online team is working on over 20 online trainings and each quarter we will be adding 30 training titles. In this newsletter you learn more about online assessments and personal development plans.
We will also be covering more on our Inland Academy. The Inland Shipping sector in Europe is continuously growing and more and more ships are being added to the European Inland Fleet. Also, this year new captains, certified and competent tot the highest standards, will receive their certifications from our academy. This is a unique learning path where we have been seeing an increase in enrollment year by year.
I hope you have a great read and if you have any question feel free to contact us. Also have a look at our agenda for opening trainings and seminars.
We look forward to seeing you again!
Online Assessments & Personal Development Plan
The key features we would like to highlight from our LMS/CMS are the online assessments and personal development plans.
Our online CMS enables clients to create bespoke assessments for new hires to ensure continuous development and explore possibilities for promotion. Within the assessment tool a specific person needs to answer a set of questions on multiple topics. Assessments are available for navigational officers, engineers and for cargo operations. Our team of experts create bespoke assessments tailored to each customer requirements and the assessments can be done fully online or in one of our accredited locations. If assessments are done online our customers can make use of our proctoring solution in order to supervise the assessments. If required, an assessor can organize a close out meeting and add comments to each assessment.
The office has full insight in all online assessments, assessments on board and assessments performed in one of our accredited centres (competency assessment). This way we offer visibility when an assessment is completed, what kind of assessment has been performed and what the required actions are after an assessment. From the assessment results a personal development plan can easily be created in which short term as well as long term actions are set to ensure that the careers of each seafarer can continuously develop. A personal development plan is updated regularly and also sea service can be captured as well as different training.

Newsletter for inland shipping
In 2019 our Inland Shipping Academy successfully introduced an Inland Captain course (EU qualification skipper inland navigation). In 2022 two more courses have started in combination with a Dutch language course. The Nautic Captain Inland Navigation course (EU qualification) have been modified to meet the new requirements and participants are now successfully taking exams in the Dutch language!

There were delays in the implementation of the EU directive in Dutch laws and regulations, but since 17 January 2022, a new EU directive for professional qualifications in inland navigation has come into force.
From 1 May to 31 December the following applies:
Current theory exams ‘old style’
- If you pass an exam ‘old style’ before 31 December 2022, you have until 31 December 2024 to complete the trajectory.
- In addition to the ‘old style’ exams, you must complete an additional ‘transition exam’.
- For navigation, 1 oral exam must take place.
- There is a requirement for a total of 4 years sailing time (720 dg.) for EU qualification certificate (Groot Vaarbewijs)
- From 1 January 2023:
- The Navigation 1 exam (oral) will be replaced by two practical skipper exams. In total, you must then be able to prove you have had at least 3 years of sailing time.
- From January 2023, starting is only possible after passing ‘new style’ exams. The content of new style’ exams is divided differently than the ‘old style’.
More Inland Navigation courses
Our Inland Navigation department developed more courses, among a HIRAC (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment Control) course. This unique course has been developed in corporation with Chemgas Shipping and Barging and is currently successfully been released. The course is developed within our Learning Management System. The objective of the course is increase safety awareness and to meet TMSA requirements.
On the technical side different bespoke hybrid trainings are developed to operate specific technical installations on board of inland vessels, to keep track of maintenance requirements and analyse malfunctions. During those courses we make use of our part task simulators as well as our big-view in order to provide thorough technical trainings. Our team is also able to create ship specific VR-solutions for familiarization of technical systems.
