The inland shipping industry, traditionally focused on practical hands-on training, is increasingly realizing the benefits of training on simulators to minimise training costs, improve efficiency and increase to a large extend training effectiveness.

 

Moreover, practical hands-on training often causes nuisance for other traffic on the river and in the port, which is highly undesirable. On top of safety training and assessments, simulators and new virtual reality tools also give companies the possibility to investigate eventual incidents or near misses in order to constantly improve themselves.

State of the art inland simulators

At Simwave you’ll find two state of the art inland river navigation simulators, certified according the inland shipping requirements; DNV-GL / CBR / CCNR. The fact that they can be interfaced with one of our seven Full Mission Engine Rooms makes it globally unique. 

 

The mathematical 3D ship models are specially designed for river navigation including all the applied factors when navigating on a river and in shallow water.

  • Realistic trainee and target ships in accordance with requirements for the CCNR Practical Examination and the Dutch CCV Radar Patent Examination.
  • Wheelhouse configuration in compliance with one-man operation requirements as stated in the Rhine Vessel Inspection Regulations (RVIR).
  • Wheelhouse height adjustable by trainee with dynamic collision, wind and stability model.
  • Multi-functional touch panels meeting functional requirements as stated in the RVIR e.g. for conning including blue sign, navigation and ADN lights, sound signals, engine/machinery and fire alarms, Inland AIS, etc.

  • Control instruments such as RiverPilot, steering levers, engine telegraphs for reversible gearbox, 360 degrees bowtruster, Azimuth Propulsion and foot-pedal switches based on inland industry standards.
  • Type-approved River RADAR, instructor controlled scanner selection (fwd/aft) and adjustable scanner revolutions for normal and fast ship simulation.
  • RADAR simulation replicates realistic signal behaviour and limitations such as pulse length, false echoes, rain, snow, waves, shadow casting depending on water level and scanner height.
  • Instructor controlled loading conditions of the vessel during a session such as dynamic visual, stability and sailing characteristics related to actual loading conditions.

  • Realistic interaction effects such as squat effect, bank effect and ship interaction effects using live two-way fluid dynamics calculations.
